Until a little over 100 years ago, walking was the primary way of getting from place to place for most city-dwellers. People lived within walking distance of their jobs, stores, schools and churches. Neighborhoods were a hodge-podge of factories, retailers, businesses, apartments, homes and slums. While horse-drawn streetcars mounted on fixed rails existed in many larger cities, they were slow and limited in their hauling capacity.

Substitute teacher training
During this past month, the Hamilton Historic Main Street has been quite busy with various developmental activities.
At noon on Aug. 1, 1966, Allen Crum, the floor manager at the University Co-Op, looked out the window and witnessed several students dragging a limp teenager through the grass on the edge of the University of Texas campus.
