James Elliot Hughes,78, of Jonesboro, passed from this life on August 8, 2026.
James was born Aprill 11, 1948 in Comanche County to James Woody Hughes and Ollie Jean Snodgrass.
After enlisting in the US Army at 18 and seeing places he’d never expected, James made his way back to Central Texas, where the bulk of his life was spent. James loved hunting and fishing, a good cold beer, fried fish with friends and being outdoors. His stories were larger than life, just like him and his jovial nature will be greatly missed.
James was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ollie Jean, his stepmother Leta Mae, beloved brother Tony, sister Sue, niece Ronnie, sister-in-law Denette and brother-in-law Frank, dearest friends Gaylon Jones, Glenn Stifflemire and Ralph Lucas and his cherished wife Sue.
He is survived by his children, James Ross Hughes and partner Teresa and children, Jennifer Bunch and husband Dwayne, Jessica Hughes Shaw and husband Tanner, Jeremy Hughes and wife Lindsy; siblings Rita Barbee and Kenneth Snodgrass and wife Diane; brother-in-law Kevin Gilmore, beloved niece Devyn Black, her husband Mitchell and baby Emmitt; former wife Denise Horton and husband Terry and a host of nieces, nephews and friends who became family.
James’ ashes were interred at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen on September 4 and the family will hold a Celebration of Life Saturday, November 7 at Bottlinger Barn from 2-4 p.m.
The family requests memorials be made to VOA Texas, The Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, Combined Arms or The Nature Conservancy.
