Nancy Ruth Caldwell

July 29, 1930-Sept. 1, 2026 Nancy Ruth Fischer Caldwell, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, healthcare leader, singer, outstanding bridge player, and woman of deep Christian faith, passed away peacefully on Sept. 1, 2026, at the age of 96.

Nancy was born July 29, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio. She and her sister Edith grew up during the Great Depression and World War II. Their mother died while they were young, and their father, Fred Fischer, an engineer, raised them with the help of their two grandmothers. Those years helped shape Nancy’s determination, independence, discipline, and extraordinary work ethic.

Exceptionally bright, Nancy graduated from high school at 16 as valedictorian, entered The College of Wooster at 16, and graduated in 1950, just before her 20th birthday, with degrees in mathematics and chemistry.

At Wooster she met William “Bill” Stone Caldwell, a World War II veteran and 1948 graduate. They married while Nancy was still a student. Bill earned a master’s degree in geology from the University of Illinois in 1950, and they moved to Midland, where he began his career as a petroleum geologist and their five children were born.

When Bill turned 40, he left his established oil and gas career to answer a call to ministry. Nancy, seven years younger, was 33. With four children at home and very little money, the family moved to Austin, where Bill entered seminary and Nancy earned her nursing degree at Brackenridge. She later earned a master’s degree in hospital administration.

As Bill served Presbyterian churches across Texas, Nancy built a distinguished career in nursing administration and hospital leadership. She served as Director of Nursing in Hamilton, at Val Verde Hospital in Del Rio, and at Baptist Hospital in Beaumont. Analytical, organized, and decisive, she knew how to build and lead teams. Later, she worked as a healthcare insurance auditor.

Nancy was a natural leader. She founded a chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood in The Woodlands and served and led in church and community organizations throughout her life.

She was highly competitive and loved puzzles and challenges. Bridge became a lifelong passion, and at age 88 she became a Grand Life Master, reflecting both her remarkable intellect and determination to keep learning and competing.

Music was another great love. Nancy had a beautiful, powerful voice and regularly led church choirs. She loved hymns and sacred music, and singing became an important expression of the Christian faith that sustained her.

Family remained at the center of Nancy’s world. She loved holidays, birthdays, traditions, and having generations together. One favorite tradition was making German sweet rolls, learned from her grandmother and passed down to her children and grandchildren. She celebrated her family’s accomplishments, offered advice freely, and expected them - as she expected herself - to do their best.

Nancy and Bill had five children: Margaret Ginder and her husband, Bill; Mary K Gardner and her husband, Bob; Tom Caldwell and his wife, Sara; Karen Caldwell, deceased; and Fred Caldwell and his wife, Susan.

Her grandchildren include Robert William Ginder and his wife, Lesa; John Caldwell Ginder and his wife, Amy; Kathryn (Katie) Margaret Ginder Flippin and her husband, Christopher; Robbye Kaye Gardner Lengefeld and her husband, Jon; Riley Fischer Gardner and his wife, Ashley; Amanda Grace Caldwell Morris and her husband, Stephen; and Lindsey Ruth Caldwell McConathy and her husband, Michael.

Her fifteen great-grandchildren include Emme Marie Ginder Barker, William Kayden Ginder, Robert Wade Ginder, Aiden Christopher Flippin, Abigail Kathryn Flippin, Lillie Ann Ginder, Thomas Caldwell Ginder, Sydney Kaye Lengefeld, Caleb Jon Lengefeld, Kate Elizabeth Lengefeld, Tristan James Gardner, Connor Paten Gardner, Leo Fischer McConathy, Lucy Rose Mc-Conathy, and Amelia Susan Morris. Nancy’s family also includes her great-greatgrandson, Beckett Reed Barker.

Nancy loved being a pastor’s wife. Her Christian faith was woven throughout her life, and she embraced the ministry she and Bill shared. As Bill served as a Presbyterian minister and later as an interim pastor, Nancy participated fully: leading, singing, serving, encouraging, and using her gifts wherever needed.

Nancy and Bill eventually retired to Holly Lake Ranch near Hawkins, Texas. After Bill’s death, Nancy moved to the Houston area to be near family.

Those who knew Nancy will remember her uncommon intelligence, determination, energy, work ethic, competitiveness, and commitment to excellence. She always had something to accomplish, organize, solve, or pursue.

In the final season of Nancy’s life, her family is deeply grateful to the outstanding staff in Memory Care at The Village at Gleannloch Farms and especially to Erin and the team at Heart to Heart Hospice for the compassion, comfort, and support they provided Nancy and her family. Nancy’s family grieves her absence, but not without hope. Her faith through nearly a century of life rested ultimately not on her own considerable strength or accomplishments, but on the faithfulness of God and the promises of Jesus Christ.

Among the Scriptures Nancy personally chose for her service were the words of Psalm 23: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” That is the assurance her family celebrates today.

A Celebration of Life for Nancy will be held Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Northwoods Presbyterian Church, 3320 Cypress Creek Parkway, Houston, Texas 77068.

Interment of her ashes will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton at a later date.
