Mary Josephine McKandless Gromatzky passed away July 30, 2023, in Hamilton, surrounded by those she loved and those who loved her dearly.

A graveside service was set for 10 a.m. Aug. 2 in Oakwood Cemetery, Hamilton.

Mary Jo was born Aug. 30, 1934, in Hamilton County

to Willie “Terrell” and Lily “Gladys” McKandless.

She was a lifelong resident of Hamilton County. Mary Jo was a 1952 graduate of Hamilton High School and a very proud member of the 1952 State Champion girls basketball team.

She worked for the City of Hamilton for many years and retired in 2001. She also “moonlighted” for many years at the local Dairy Kreem and at Haile’s Pizza.

In her retirement, she enjoyed working on quilt tops with her quilting friends as well as cooking and baking for friends and family. She was well-known in town for being a great cook and baker.

Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. She was a very proud mom and mother-in-law, “Nen- to her grandchildren, great-grandma, sister, aunt and friend. She loved family get-togethers as well as attending the activities of her grandkids and great-grandkids. She will be very missed by all who loved her!

She was a member of Littleville Baptist Church for most of her life and was baptized in the Leon River as a young girl by Brother Simpson.

Mary Jo is survived by her three daughters and their husbands, Kathleen and Boyd Holley, Sheryle and David Kopp and Karen and Marty Jungman; six grandchildren, Jessica and Jason Coalson, Jared Holley, Tanner and Ailey Kopp, Katelin and Greg Lanting, Taylor and Colton Berry and Ashlin and Blake Rice; her sister, Patsy and Stan Alexander; brother, Steve and Londa McKandless; 10 great-grandchildren; four nephews; a niece; and several great-nieces and -nephews.
