George Wright, Jr.
George Wright, Jr., Loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend joined the Lord as he entered Heaven’s gates on Feb. 21, 2022.
George was a gentle spirit who was humble, generous, and kind. He was born on January 18, 1927, in Hico, Texas, to George K. and Elba Wright. He attended up to the first grade in Hico and then his family moved to Conroe, where he graduated from high school. He attended The University of Texas and then joined the U.S. Navy in 1944. He was assigned to the aircraft tender, on the U.S.S. San Clemente and he served in the Pacific until the end of the war in Japan. After the war, George served with the occupation forces in China. He often said, “Harry Truman saved my life.”
After he was discharged in 1951, he completed his degree in Science at North Tex - as State University, where he met the love of his life, Joan Ford. They married on July 28, 1951, in Carthage, Texas They had three daughters, Pamela, Karen, and Lisa, who he loved and cherished while growing up in Houston, Texas. George, affectionally named “Bubba,” loved his grandchildren dearly and said their love and affection kept him forever humbled. He always commented that a guardian angel was forever present during his lifetime (including dangerous work).
After graduation, he was employed by Humble Oil (now Exxon Mobil). Some of his job duties included Design Drafting, Supervision of Design Draftsman, and Construction Supervision.
After 36 years at the Humble Oil Company, he retired but still enjoyed his work – thereafter; he worked as a consultant for the following five years that allowed him to travel the country with Joan. His most enjoyable work was the consultant job in which one client named “Red Adair” asked for his services.
In 1977, he and Joan bought a small farm north of Pottsville, Texas. His boyhood days were revived in this endeavor, and some of his fondest memories were the friendships of the local people.
George had many passions in his life; he loved the Lord, his family, and helping others. He also had numerous hobbies that ran the gambit from hunting, fishing, spending time at his farm, and keeping up with the stock market.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his granddaughter, Jennifer Monroe. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 70 years, Joan Wright; his younger brother Bill Wright; three daughters, Pamela Wright Schmidt and her husband Michael, Karen Wright, and Lisa Schrank and her husband Douglas; four grandchildren; Michael Potthoff and his wife Ruth, Cassie Dennis and her husband Scott, Mari Schleh and her husband Eddie, and Julia Schrank, and seven great-grandchildren; Joshua and Luke Potthoff, Emmerson, Maddie, and Campbell Dennis, and Edu and Mateo Schleh.
