Etheline Surley

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Etheline Elverna Lucas Surley, who peacefully left this world at Baylor Scott and White in Temple on Jan. 30, 2024, at the age of 81.

Services were held Saturday, Feb. 3, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pottsville. Burial was in Pottsville Cemetery under the direction of Riley Funeral Home.

Etheline, a beloved resident of Pottsville for her entire life, exchanged vows with Joe Surley on July 28, 1962, in a ceremony held at Trinity Lutheran Church. Known to many as the warm presence at Brookshire Brothers’ checkout number 5, Etheline was not just a familiar face; she was a skilled seamstress, lending her talents to the local community. Her dedication extended beyond the sewing needle, as she served as a valued member of the Pottsville Volunteer Fire Department for many years.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and cherished member of the community, Etheline’s kindness and warmth touched the lives of those around her. When not attending to her responsibilities, she could often be found exploring the countryside, captivated by the beauty of wildflowers.

Etheline is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe Surley; her parents, Gus and Helen Lucas; and her brother, Milton Lucas.

She is survived by her loving sons, David Surley and wife Dawne of Stephenville, Glenn Surley and wife Julie of Pottsville and James Surley and wife Brandi of Hamilton; a brother, Wilford Lucas and wife Till of McAllen; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family members who also mourn her passing.

Pallbearers were Stephen Surley, Daniel Galindo, Dustin Dodson, Mitch Surley, Grant Surley, Brad Surley, Johann Jeschke and Blake Balzen.

As we remember and celebrate the life of Etheline Elverna Surley, let us hold onto the precious moments and enduring legacy she leaves behind. May she rest in peace.
