Eddie Bruton

Eddie Clarie Ayers Bruton, 61 passed on the morning of April 24, 2020. The family will hold graveside service at Mound Cemetery.

Eddie was born Sept. 9, 1958, in Gatesville to Hollis Edward Ayers and Eunice Marie Martin Ayers. She grew up in Mound and attended school there in her early years. When Mound school closed, she attended school in Gatesville. After school Eddie waitressed at Dryers restaurant.

She traveled around Texas until she settled back home in Gatesville, then started working at Gatesville Police Department, first as a dispatcher and was promoted to Communication Supervisor and over records. A few years later she went to the police academy at CTC and became a police officer. She was promoted to Sergeant a few years later.

After 20 years at the Gatesville Police Department she retired with a great career in law enforcement. She loved dispatching, so she started teaching it with Central Texas Council of Governments, spending a few years there.

After teaching she went back to dispatching at Hamilton County Sheriff Office for a short time, then went to work at TDCJ at the Alfred Hughes unit first in records then in Use of Force before having to retire due to health reasons.

She spent many years enjoying life with her family raising rabbits, miniature and full-size horses, and cattle. She served on the Coryell County Youth Fair board of directors for many years and helped with the county youth fair rabbit show.

She was also on the Gatesville Riding Club’s board of directors rodeo committee many years where she oversaw the mutton busting.

Eddie loved volunteering for her beloved community of Gatesville.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 26 years, David Bruton; her parents, Hollis and Eunice Ayers; sister Judy Hemmingway; and nephew Nathan Moore.

Eddie is survived by her sons Jeremy and John Dossey; sister Sandra Varner and husband Tommy; stepsons Heath, Jared and Tannon and wife, Shelly Bruton; eight grandchildren, Tucker and Dylan Bruton and Lane, Cody, Arron and Bryan Dossey, Randy Bruton, and Karleigh Wismer; nephews Jack Moore and Bryan Hemmingway of Maine; and multiple great-nephews, great-nieces, cousins and friends.

Memorial donations can be made to a lung disease charity of your choice, such as Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, COPD Foundation or American Respiratory Care Foundation.
