Dixie Herring

Dixie Kay (Gerald) Herring, 84, died Thursday, June 8, 2023, in Waco.

A memorial service will be held at Outreach Church of Christ in Hamilton July 1 at 2 p.m.

Dixie was born in Hamilton on April 26, 1939, to Pope Miller (P.M.) and Mona Elizabeth (Ferguson) Gerald.

She grew up working at the family’s feed mill. She was a good student, the valedictorian of the Hamilton High School Class of 1957. She obtained a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree in three years from Texas Christian University in 1960. She married Gerald Scott on Aug. 29, 1959. She later married Clint Herring, Jr. on March 22, 1986.

She was an elementary school teacher in Hamilton ISD and an art and reading teacher in Meridian ISD. Dixie loved life in Hamilton. She told stories of the interesting, funny people who lived there, sometimes to complete strangers.

She was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining, saying, “Cook enough for an army; you never know who will show up to share a meal.”

She was beautiful, smart and fun, beloved by many, and she was a faithful member of Outreach Church of Christ.

She trained her well-behaved dogs, which she took everywhere. She never lost her love of travel and used to say that she, “…would go anyplace, anytime given a 15-minute notice.” Her pictures of travel with family and friends were all over her house, and she never tired of seeing new places with her wonderful, adventurous friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; spouse Clint Herring, Jr.; and companion Mitch Lykins.

She is survived by two sons, Gerald Wayne Scott, Jr. (G.W.) and wife Debra (Davis) Scott of Nacogdoches and John Russell Scott and wife Jennifer (Webb) Scott of Mc-Gregor; four grandchildren, Miller Scott of White Salmon, Washington, Rachel Scott of San Antonio, Katy Scott of Plano and Jordan Scott of Nacogdoches; a brother, P.M. Gerald, Jr. (Bubba) and wife Shirley (Dittmar) of Hamilton; a niece, D’Layne (Gerald) Benson and husband Steve Benson of Haley, Idaho; nephew Colter Gerald of Hamilton; and companion George Forgus of Shive.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her honor to the Hamilton Public Library, Hamilton Volunteer Fire Department or Outreach Church of Christ.
