Sugar alcohols may have the most misleading name. They are neither sugar nor alcohol; they are a type of carbohydrate derived from fruits and vegetables. However, most commercial sugar alcohols are synthetically made. You can usually spot them on the ingredient list by “-ol” at the end of the names. Examples include sorbitol, xylitol, lactitol, mannitol, erythritol, and maltitol.
