On May 29, 1920, a group of World War I veterans met at the Hamilton County courthouse and formed a temporary organization – Cunningham Post 222 of the American Legion.
Tom T. Main was elected Commander, Adjutant was Tom S. McKinley, Jr., Treasurer was Donald Cameron and Chaplain was Pete M. Curry. The National Organization of the American Legion itself was only one year old at this time.
