Funeral services were held Saturday, July 6 at Purmela Baptist Church, with Dr. John Vassar officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Bundrant Cemetery.

Sam was born on April 13, 1933 to the late Andrew Jackson Myers and Prudie Bell (Comer) Myers in Purmela. Sam spent his early life on a farm in Purmela and attended Purmela School until it closed. He then transferred to Gatesville and graduated from Evant High School in 1950. Sam valued his faith, family, farm, and friends. He never met a stranger and was never at a loss for words.

After graduation from high school, he left Purmela to pursue employment in Fort Worth. His great desire was to return to Purmela, but a wife and later five children to support, the employment in a larger metropolitan area was God’s provision. He worked a few different jobs prior to securing long term employment with Vought Aircraft in Grand Prairie as a plumber, where he worked 29 years, before retiring and returning to his third generation home in Purmela to continue farming and ranching. After retirement, along with farming and ranching he enjoyed gardening, and was an excellent “shade tree mechanic” and “fix it man”.

Sam met the love of his life, Donie Sue (Calhoun) when they were very young, and eventually began dating when she was in high school. They married on June 15, 1956 and celebrated 63 years of marriage this year. Sam was a long-time member of Purmela Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and in many other roles through the years.

Sam is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Prudie Myers and a daughter, Carla Sue (Myers) Tawater.

Sam is survived by his wife, Donie Sue; sons, Andrew Myers and wife, Debbie of Alvarado, Dr. David Myers and wife, Sharon of Purmela; daughters, Brenda Jeffers of Evant, Ellen Myers of Purmela; son-in-law, Tony Tawater and wife, Twila of Cleburne; brother, John Myers and wife, Norma of Burleson; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family and friends.
