Gary Bennett Roberts, 76, of Gustine, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on June 6, 2022.

Visitation was June 8 at Harvest Hills Funeral Home in Hico. Graveside services were June 9 in Siloam Cemetery, Gustine.

Gary was born in Abilene on Aug. 16, 1945, to S.D. and Bertha Mae Roberts. He grew up in the Abilene area and started working at a young age.

In 1963, he met Rentha Seabourn and they eloped to a small border town in Mexico on July 12. Early in their marriage they traveled all over West Texas while Gary worked on power lines for various companies.

In 1972, they purchased their land a few miles outside of Gustine and in 1981 built their home and moved there permanently. Gary and Rentha ran Cedar Hill Dairy from 1982 to 1986 with the help of their children Gary Wayne, Larry and Kim. In 1990, they started R&R Pecan Harvesters with their son Larry and harvested pecans until around 2014. In 1986, he went to work at the Hamilton County Co-op as a lineman and in 2008 retired to spend more time with his family.

He was a wonderful caretaker to his wife as her health declined in their later years.

Gary spent most of his time working to provide for his family and create the farm there today building fences, barns, corrals and planting trees with his wife. He was a quiet and humble man whose handshake was his word and understood the meaning of a hard day’s work.

When he did take some time to do things he enjoyed, you could find him in his deer stand, wetting a hook, target shooting or just spending some quality time with the people he loved the most. Sitting in the front yard under the pecan trees he and Rentha had planted in the mid ’80s had become a favorite place for the family to gather and visit watching the grandkids play and swing and just have fun.

Gary’s greatest gift was the love and care he gave to his wife, his children, his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren. He believed Jesus was his savior and spent his life evolving into the man the Lord meant for him to be.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 57 years, Rentha Roberts; sister Goldie Allison; and brothers Doyle Roberts and Dillard Roberts.

He is survived by his children, Gary Wayne Roberts Sr., Larry (Doylena) Roberts, Kim (Melody) Roberts, Donna Groeling and Chad (Laura) Roberts; brother DC (Jeri) Roberts; grandchildren Stephanie Lancaster, Jessica Evans, Lauren Goselin, Gary Wayne Roberts Jr., Larry Roberts II, Casey Roberts, Kristi Boone, Page Groeling, Brook Groeling, Alyvia Groeling, Tyler Watkins, Hunter Roberts, Andrew Roberts and Brynnlee Roberts; and great-grandchildren Conner Evans, JayLynn Evans, Jemma Evans, Emilee Boone, Braxton Boone, Kaymon Boone, Shyli Roberts and Case Roberts.
