Betty Jean Gilmer, 92, of Midland, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024.
A memorial/celebration service was held Friday, Sept. 6, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services were held Sept. 7 in Oakwood Cemetery, Hamilton.
Betty was born on May 13, 1932, in Hamilton to Luther (Luke) McGlothlin and Leota Trimble McGlothlin. She grew up in Hamilton, attending Hamilton High School, where she met and married her high school sweetheart, Joe Donald Gilmer on Nov. 11, 1950.
Together they embarked on a journey lasting more than 60 years.
Accepting Christ at an early age, Betty continued serving the Lord for the rest of her life with continual prayer for her family and friends. Betty and Joe had 2 sons, Joe Michael Gilmer and Mark Alan Gilmer.
They made Midland their home in 1969. Betty was a devoted wife, mother and friend to many, many people. From 1971 until 1980, she was a teaching assistant at West Elementary and Alamo Junior High.
Betty and Joe worked and traveled all over the country, working and living all over the southwest, as well as Utah and Tennessee for extended periods of time, making lifelong friends along the way.
After Joe’s semi-retirement, they enjoyed going on cruises, with several to the Bahamas and one to the Panama Canal. They also loved spending time together in the mountains of New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming.
Betty is survived by her sons, Joe Michael Gilmer and wife Dawn of Houston and Mark Alan Gilmer and wife Carla of Midland; grandson Jeffery Gilmer and wife Kathrine of Houston; granddaughter Kim Thrash and husband Michael of Houston; and great-granddaughters MacKenzie Ceballos of Houston, and Posy Thrash, Goldie Thrash and Alice Gilmer, all of Houston.
Betty is preceded in death by father, Luther McGlothlin; mother, Leota McGlothlin; and husband, Joe Donald Gilmer.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Cimarron Place of Midland, where the ladies and gentlemen greatly helped Betty with assisted living. Words cannot express enough how peaceful and caring you made her final months. She loved seeing all your smiling faces.
